Hackers use deepfake of Binance CCO in exchange listing scams
Text LinkClose
In a series of deepfake video calls, hackers have impersonated Binance chief communications officer, Patrick Hillmann, fooling several representatives of cryptocurrency projects.
The attackers used what Hillman described as an AI hologram deepfake of his image, tricking some into thinking he was helping them list on the Stock Exchange.
The COO says there’s been a recent spike in hackers pretending to be Binance employees and executives on social media platforms such as Twitter, LinkedIn and Telegram but says pre-bunking helps to be prepared, as well as defend users and the ecosystem.

BBC drama uses deepfakes to explore future threats
Text LinkSeries two of BBC’s The Capture cleverly uses deepfake videos to highlight the reality of hacked news feeds, manipulated media, and interference in politics.
One episode of the disinformation drama shows hackers replacing a security minister with a deepfake clone during his live Newsnight interview - speaking deceptively and harmfully to the public. The producers highlight the threat to democracy from deepfake technology as well as the use of AI-generated video clones that can mislead or sway public opinion, after their increasing use in election campaigns and conflicts.
Producers worked alongside a counter-terrorism advisor to show the real manipulation of hacking camera feeds and live deepfakes on TV.

Joe Biden speaks 5 languages in real-time to highlight deepfake capabilities
Text LinkClose
Students were shown a video of President Joe Biden addressing the UN while effortlessly switching between five languages, when Biden can realistically only speak English.
A workshop hosted through the Air Force’s military university provided airmen with an introduction to deepfakes as well as AI technologies that could be used to combat the threat deepfakes can pose.
The company created the Biden video to illustrate that not all deepfakes are harmful and how their universal translator tool can facilitate diplomatic communications. Using footage of someone speaking, the tool transforms it so the subject appears to be speaking a different language in real-time.

Deepfake art demonstrates time and resources required when data isn't 'free'
Text LinkClose
Two artists have used deepfake videos in a bid to encourage conversations about AV manipulation.
Soft Evidence shows events that never happened by machines trained to lie. An erotic love scene between two women uses face-swapping to depict a moment of consensual queer intimacy.
An original data set was created aligned with their message that "open data sets are not inherently free of problematic issues". To demonstrate the time, labour and resources required when data isn't "free and just there for the taking", a source subject was shot over five days in Mexico City, art directed scenes with a body double and captured facial data.

New tool generates deepfake videos from one single image
Text LinkClose
MegaPortraits can overlay still photos of people with a realistic and expressive moving version of another person.
Samsung Labs built a new tool that generates realistic deepfakes with just a single photo or painting that can imitate facial expressions, head and neck stretching, and the other subtle elements that make a human face come to life.
The researchers unveiled a novel method for creating high-resolution neural avatars. The AI model generating the movement is trained from two random sample frames from the source and driver at each step. The high-resolution avatars are designed to function regardless of whether someone looks like the image they are imitating. The group’s efforts also include working on creating the deepfakes in real-time. The AI model connects 100 neural avatars linked to existing images and runs at 130 frames per second.
With simple deepfake tools being easily made to the public, there are concerns of non-consensual content, especially when it comes to celebrities and resurrecting the deceased.

Film removes profanities with deepfake tech turning its rating from R to PG
Text LinkClose
Lionsgate’s Fall used deepfake technology to seamlessly edit out profanities. With a limited production budget, the independent action-triller couldn’t afford to reshoot new scenes so instead turned to synthetic media.
In a high-intensity action scene, two friends climb an abandoned radio tower but the ladder falls and the pair are left stranded 2,000 feet high. At such a height it was only natural that swear words slipped out, meaning more than 30 F-bombs needed to be amended into something more acceptable and family friendly.
Film director and co-writer, Scott Mann, founded Flawless to use deepfakes as a way to realistically dub movies from one language to another. He decided to use the same technology to edit out profanities for a PG-13 rating. The result was seamless with actors reportedly saying they couldn’t even tell what was edited.

False claims of 'deepfake' President Biden go viral
Text Link“You can’t be pro-insurrection and pro-American.” —@JoeBiden pic.twitter.com/ufJxWPruj4
— The Democrats (@TheDemocrats) July 26, 2022
People are falsely claiming a video of US President Joe Biden is a deepfake.
The video was published on the Democrats' official Twitter account and quickly became part of a wider conspiracy theory.
Social media users have claimed the video has been altered to superimpose the president's face. Posts doubting the legitimacy of the video have been shared thousands of times, including by prominent pundits from right-wing US television channels, causing confusion and misinformation.
One post that has been retweeted almost 40,000 times says "a normal person blinks their eye 15 to 20 times a minute" but a longer version of the video has been published by the White House which shows the president blinking several times. As technology continues to improve, it is important to point out that deepfakes can blink.
Another element that created confusion is due to claims President Biden looks different in another video published the very same day. The differences in his appearance are due to the lighting used when filming.

The mayor of Berlin, Madrid and Vienna filed complaints over someone impersonating their counterpart in Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, during what was reported as a 'deepfake' video call. It was not in fact a deepfake it was just a look-alike.
Franziska Giffey, said 'he looked and sounded like Klitschko' on the Webex video conferencing platform that but that she grew suspicious when he spoke of Ukrainian refugees cheating the German state of benefits. He then appeared to call for refugees to be brought back to Ukraine for military service. The Berlin mayor’s office contacted the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, who confirmed through authorities in Kyiv, that the person on the video call was not the real Klitschko.

Queen’s appearance in Paddington believed to be 'deepfake'
Text LinkA Paddington Bear sketch, celebrating the Platinum Jubilee, has left viewers baffled as they question whether the Queen was acting or if it was a deepfake.
The clip shows a clumsy Paddington bear join the Queen for afternoon tea. He offers her a marmalade sandwich from his iconic red hat but Her Majesty surprisingly pulls one from her own handbag where she keeps them saved for later.
The video has over 12 million views on YouTube where comments are disabled. Many took to social media to debate if the performance was fake. One Twitter user said: "Hope everyone realises that Paddington and The Queen video is CGI? Clearly a much younger woman, they should at least use an older actress as the basis to make it more believable. It’s fun and all, but not remotely plausible really." Another person commented saying: “I don’t know what’s more incredible: the CGI for Paddington Bear, or the deep fake of the Queen.”
Screenwriter Frank Cottrell-Boyce co-wrote the Paddington sketches as well as 007 and believes conspiracy theorists believed the clip was a deepfake and the monarch didn't star in it at all. He said he was 'grateful' for how her Majesty who reminded people 'we share something good'.
I know we give them a lot of grief on the TL but credit where credit is due: the UK has really nailed the whole resurrection by CGI trend based on the recent footage of the Queen I’ve seen. Hope Lucasfilm poaches whoever is responsible!

the CGI here is crazy good cause on one side of the table you’ve got an undeniably real and not CGI, alive and fully functioning being, and on the other side is the queen https://t.co/nZ9FzrnqQ1

World's first fully AI-generated multiplot film
Text Link— SALT (@SALT_VERSE) June 14, 2022
A fully AI-generated filmverse, Salt, is a web6 internet adventure where community choices drive a multi-plot story to create a 1970s lo-fi sci-fi universe.
The science-fiction film complete with 35mm footage of space freighters and moody alien landscapes relies largely on artificial intelligence tools to create the series of short films released often on Twitter. A unique twist to the plot is the need for audience participation. Viewers can vote on what happens next, where the results are created with just a few clicks, quicker than any Hollywood filmmaker could muster.
The film is built using image-generation tools such as Stable Diffusion, Midjourney and DALL-E 2 as well as AI voice generation tools such as Synthesia and Murf. As time is of the essence, text-generator GPT-3 helps write the script.
