President Joe Biden deepfaked singing Baby Shark
President Joe Biden deepfaked singing Baby Shark
A video that has surfaced on TikTok shows footage of Joe Biden singing the world famous children’s song has been identified as a deepfake.
The PM announces he will sing the national anthem but instead begins to sing the opening lines of Baby Shark in the doctored vision where his lips match the words. A news strap at the bottom of the screen makes it look like a broadcast clip with a logo of an onion in the corner which looks similar to that of the satirical website. The original footage is from Biden’s speech on lowering costs for families at a community college in Irvine, California.
From comments on social media it is clear that some people believe the deepfake was actually Joe Biden singing with some claiming this is ‘proof’ he is suffering from dementia and others baffled how he is still a world leader. The video has been removed from TikTok and Instagram. As new technologies continue to advance, deepfake political videos that spread misinformation and influence elections are an increasing concern. Two artists have used deepfake videos in a bid to encourage conversations about AV manipulation.
Soft Evidence shows events that never happened by machines trained to lie. An erotic love scene between two women uses face-swapping to depict a moment of consensual queer intimacy.
An original data set was created aligned with their message that "open data sets are not inherently free of problematic issues". To demonstrate the time, labour and resources required when data isn't "free and just there for the taking", a source subject was shot over five days in Mexico City, art directed scenes with a body double and captured facial data.

Queen’s appearance in Paddington believed to be 'deepfake'
A Paddington Bear sketch, celebrating the Platinum Jubilee, has left viewers baffled as they question whether the Queen was acting or if it was a deepfake.
The clip shows a clumsy Paddington bear join the Queen for afternoon tea. He offers her a marmalade sandwich from his iconic red hat but Her Majesty surprisingly pulls one from her own handbag where she keeps them saved for later.
The video has over 12 million views on YouTube where comments are disabled. Many took to social media to debate if the performance was fake. One Twitter user said: "Hope everyone realises that Paddington and The Queen video is CGI? Clearly a much younger woman, they should at least use an older actress as the basis to make it more believable. It’s fun and all, but not remotely plausible really." Another person commented saying: “I don’t know what’s more incredible: the CGI for Paddington Bear, or the deep fake of the Queen.”
Screenwriter Frank Cottrell-Boyce co-wrote the Paddington sketches as well as 007 and believes conspiracy theorists believed the clip was a deepfake and the monarch didn't star in it at all. He said he was 'grateful' for how her Majesty who reminded people 'we share something good'.
I know we give them a lot of grief on the TL but credit where credit is due: the UK has really nailed the whole resurrection by CGI trend based on the recent footage of the Queen I’ve seen. Hope Lucasfilm poaches whoever is responsible!

the CGI here is crazy good cause on one side of the table you’ve got an undeniably real and not CGI, alive and fully functioning being, and on the other side is the queen https://t.co/nZ9FzrnqQ1

Keanu Reeves stops a robbery in extreme deepfake
Keanu Reeves stops a robbery in extreme deepfake
Keanu Reeves has been caught on camera bravely stopping a robbery 'killing them with kindness' in a deepfake video.
The video has been watched nearly 17,000,000 times. The amount of effort put into creating this deepfake, or as the team called it "'digitising Keanu's essence" was immense. So much so the team behind it decided to showcase a behind the scenes clip which alone scored more than 3,000,000 views.
The entire production was filmed like it was "found footage" on a cellphone. They needed a Keanu Reeves impersonator but decided to try and use a cheapfake - meaning no artificial intelligence but instead very basic editing and recontextualising, so just a mask of Reeve's face was worn here. More than 200,030 iterations were used and over $250 dollars spent on this elaborate deepfake.

Deepfake technology allows anyone to dance like a pro
Deepfake technology allows anyone to dance like a pro
Researches created a program that copies dance moves of one person and 'gifts' them to another by making it look as if they can dance using neural-networking software.
It took several months for the team to map the face of one person to the entire body of another. The video shows the original source performing and then various other shots of people never actually doing what they have done but performing perfectly thanks to deepfake technology. The process captures two neural (generative adversarial) networks, videos of one person dancing and another video of someone moving. The first movement is mimicked by the second dancer and additional software is then used to refine the routine and ensure the face appears clear.
The UC Berkley researchers created a paper on "do as I do" motion transfer. They say the project 'hit a nerve with folks', especially disabled people, for example quadriplegics, who wanted to visually watch themselves move in ways they were unable to do physically. Due to a simple method producing compelling results, the researchers were motivated to provide a forensics tool for reliable synthetic content detection. Additionally they also released an open-source dataset of videos available to the public interested in motion transfer.

A marketing deepfake video of Elon Musk has gone viral online, gaining nearly 1,000,000 views in just a few days.
The clip shows Elon held hostage in a warehouse by real-estate investment startup reAlpha and explains the companies mission along with some satirical jokes. The quality of the deepfake isn’t very convincing but the voice sounds fairly accurate.
The video acknowledges that this isn’t the real Elon Musk and that the parody was created as under Fair Use as entertainment and education on short term rentals and fractional real estate model and that no malice is intended.

Mark Zuckerberg’s deepfake speech shines light on power of Facebook
Mark Zuckerberg’s deepfake speech shines light on power of Facebook
A fake video of Mark Zuckerberg giving a speech about Facebook's power and control of the wider public has gone viral online.
The deepfake, spoken by a voice actor, moves seamlessly and blinks and gestures like Zuckerberg would, making it very realistic, except for his voice. The clip was framed with a news strap and CNBC logo, making it look like something from a TV update.
The art installation Spectre uses deepfake artworks to explore the power of the digital influence industry, technology and their impacts on privacy and democracy. Canny engineers clipped a 21-second segment from the original seven minute video then trained the algorithm as well as videos of the voice actor speaking, and then reconstructed the frames in Zuckerberg's video to match the facial movements of the voice actor to realistically sync.
Despite their intent to use AI media for art, satire and political debate, there still remains concerns around truth, identity and consent, including citing an unauthorised trademark of a news station, which potentially stirred fake news.

Kim Kardashian has claimed she loves manipulating people for money in a very realistic but fake video posted online.
The deepfake looks and sounds extraordinarily similar to the celebrity, with hand gestures, blinking and side eye glances, and overall mannerisms identically matching her and the moving image work is from the ‘Big Dada’ series as part of the ‘Spectre’ project which includes the Mark Zuckerberg deepfake.
Despite the high quality of the edit and the creator's intent to entertain, Kim didn’t consent and the clip was removed due to copyright infringement from Condé Nast.

Deepfake Tom Cruise goes viral on social media
Deepfake Tom Cruise goes viral on social media
New Tom Cruise deepfake looks amazing (and, of course scary too) and is doing the rounds on Twitter.
— Victor Riparbelli (@vriparbelli) February 26, 2021
Quick technical breakdown/explanation👇 https://t.co/UpWpCt6H1O
In just a few days, TikTok Tom, seemingly showing the Hollywood superstar teeing off at the golf course, had video views climbing past 10 million and was becoming a global phenomenon.
Created by visual and AI effects artist Chris Umé, the video led Umé to establish his own company, Metaphysic, with the aim of using deepfake technology to accomplish incredible feats for movies, ads, and other forms of media that were previously unthinkable even with the best special effects.
Yet talent soon turned to as the wider community began to fear the reality and power of the video by questioning the future of AI, consent and ethics.
Synthetic video expert, Victor Riparbelli, breaks down the technicalities to highlight good quality deepfakes take time, effort and skills.
”Well 90% of the realism is due to this being a Tom Cruise impersonator in the first place (hair, voice, clothing, acting). Faceswap is the cherry on top that makes it feel almost uncanny. It corrects for the only thing the impersonator can’t fake convincingly: the face appearance.
Software used here is probably open source. Likely tweaked by the creator. Taking on and off the hat and sunglasses is very cleverly used as a transition point from real video to deepfake.
The video is only synthesised in the beginning/end, not in the middle when he’s swinging the club. This is clearly a very experienced deepfake and visual effects artist.
Don’t underestimate how much time and resources it took to make this. Likely weeks.
This tech will be a game changer for celebrities in terms of scaling their likeness/IP.
Brands can work with impersonators on set and finalize content by having the celebrity voice over the final content (until voice cloning is good enough).
While this is still very hard to pull off (and still would require an impersonator, studio etc.), someone with enough resources can certainly use this maliciously. My bet is that 100% of publicly available deepfake detectors will not be able to detect this.”

Celebrity chef 'brought back to life' in deepfake causes ethical debate
A documentary on Anthony Bourdain’s life has sparked a debate over the ethical use of artificial intelligence to bring the late celebrity chef ‘back to life’.
Director Morgan Neville teamed up with a software company to use AI to synthetically create the reading of an email by Bourdain.
Major issues arose when Bourdain’s ex-wife took to Twitter disputing claims of consent - a major concern when resurrecting deceased people. Neville’s comments in a New Yorker interview — “we can have a documentary ethics panel about it later” were regarded as ignorant and dismissive by many.
